I don't understand it either. I wonder if it is one of those games where an alpha channel is used for other purposes. I do not bother with games graphics but as a texture seems common.
What format is the image, can you post it ?
or what happens if you use Layers -> Mask -> Add Layer Mask then Layers Alpha Chanel
