  non-destructive editing
Posted by: godek - 01-12-2018, 12:25 AM - Forum: General questions - Replies (12)

I got a book by James Carren recently and it talks about non-destructive editing I am assuming he is refering to photoshop. Can you do adjustment layers in gimp? There was another type of layer that had to be copied over because it couldn't be in an adjustment layer it was for highlights and shadows adjustments. Can you do that in gimp too?

What I mean by non-destructive editing is that if you decide you don't want a certain correction but it is behind a ton of other corrections in the history it doesn't remove the others as well.

Where is there an tutorial on how to do this in gimp?

  JPG settings in Gimp
Posted by: quand - 01-10-2018, 10:39 AM - Forum: General questions - Replies (11)

Hi

i have a question about a jpg setting in GIMP : "use estimated quality" or "use original picure quality settings"

If I change jpg quality (90 to 95  by exemple), choose optimize and progressive options, what about "use estimated quality" ?

thanks

  Difficult Background
Posted by: Rob1955 - 01-10-2018, 10:26 AM - Forum: General questions - Replies (8)

I'm doing my first photo restoration, and have come across a problem. I know how to remove the background (sort of), but some of the subjects have helmets the same colour as the background, which is the problem. I've tried turning to black and white, but it wasn't much help. Here's the photo.

Can I automate Gimp? + How to make shortcuts?
Posted by: enginestar - 01-10-2018, 01:12 AM - Forum: General questions - Replies (4)

Can I write a macro for example and automate using a combination of tools?

AND... how can I make shortcuts?
It's painful using the menu for some really basic and simple things!

Like I select something that I wanted deleted.
I have to go to the image menu... or is it file? Oh no... it must be edit...
Now... despite having done 10 times already... what is it that I'm looking for?????????
Aha! Clear!! I click clear.

Painful.
Why cant I just select and hit delete?

Thanks.

How to add shadow - and make as good as Photoshop
Posted by: enginestar - 01-10-2018, 12:49 AM - Forum: General questions - Replies (7)

In Photoshop...
I take an image, copy all...
Create a new image (with transparent background) that is 10 pixels bigger all around...
Paste the copied image.
Add a shadow all around the pasted layer - with zero distance and 5 pixels spread
Save as a PNG.

I've tried and tried doing the same in Gimp.
Grrr... no luck.
The shadows I get are pants Smile
Nowhere near as subtle as Photoshop.

I went back and looked at other videos...
These involved making masks and other things...
I'm happy to do that (if I have to)

My thoughts were: it's just such a basic task adding a shadow around an object...
Why is it sooo painful to do?
(Errr.... I'm guessing it's not painful at all and I've just not watched the right videos on youtube.)

Thanks.

  Adjusting Value
Posted by: Espermaschine - 01-09-2018, 06:42 PM - Forum: General questions - Replies (8)

I have a grayscale layer for a Displacement Map. Its basically neutral gray, but there are other bits in various grayscales.
Because of processing, the basic gray changed and is no longer neutral gray.

How do i adjust it so that its exactly 50% gray again (808080) ?

When i use something like Levels or Curves, the tool doesnt tell me when im at my desired value.

There must be another way than just eyeing it.

Is there a way to enhance photo taken from physical LCD screen?

You can see the extreme pixelization on the forehead.

  help with fuzzy tool
Posted by: ab_dutt - 01-09-2018, 05:17 AM - Forum: General questions - Replies (2)

dear all,

i am a newbie in GIMP. so i need some help.
as you can see that from the attached pic, that I had done not a bad job by chopping off the blue color on the top using the Fuzzy selection (Magic Wand) tool (i selected the smallest brush i could find) but it needs to be refined a bit more as the interface still contains a haze of blue.
can someone suggest me how to improve this ?
thanks a lot and best wishes for the new year !

  Beginner - Applying geometry transforms
Posted by: my nellie - 01-08-2018, 11:22 PM - Forum: General questions - Replies (9)

I would like to use GIMP for making virtuals of trees' images changing the potting angle, branch placement, the pot etc
If I have one branch which at some point makes a curve at a right angle and I would like to change the right angle to an acute angle what should I do?
I understand I have to make a selection at first. A selection of the part which has to be transformed. Correct?
Then do I have to use some of the transform tools?
Does this thread answer my questions? https://www.gimp-forum.net/Thread-Gimp-s...ight=angle

Thank you in advance.

P.S. I apologize for any grammar/syntax errors... English is a foreign language to me...
