Actually my suggestion in post #28 was just using layer mask.
Perhaps I failed to convey the steps in an easily understandable way - English is not my mother tongue.

But I just liked so much that intermediate stage where I got white and black layers and the original picture appeared only as a layer mask, so I made the post too hastily. Sorry.
