Layers who disappear partially

That is worth a little experiment. Go into one of those empty layers and use the eraser tool with anti-erase enabled, just to see if anything is there: example https://i.imgur.com/o242KoD.mp4

also, which version of Gimp 2.10.xxx You can find it in Help -> About

GIMP 2.10.28 (but the problem started before and i updated to see if it would be resolved by this update, before i was in 2.8.xxx i think)

For the anti-erase, the layers turned black, but it's all.

I'll send the XCF file

okay, i sent the link !

I'm working to make a map on Gimp, and it's a huge image (16535x7087).

All was fine, i worked a lot on it, and i recently saw that some layers start to disappear partially or completely ! Like, "Amsterdam" became "Amster", or some illustration are cut in half, or some are completely gone

However, i can see that the layers are still complete theorically bc i see the dotted lines who are around the complete size of the layer (and they are still wrote in the layers screen in bottom right of course)

More and more layers are like that as i restart the project to work on it.

So firstly i thinked it was a RAM problem (i have 8GB RAM, and it's written "11.9GB" in the bottom center of the project page), so i copied the project and reduced by two the size of the image (now it's written 2.9GB) BUT the layers are still like that Sad

Also, i just saw that when i modify a text layer, i can like delete a letter and rewrite it, and the complete text appear. I tried to move the non-text layers but nothing changed for them.

Does anyone know this problem ?

Sorry for the big text, and eventually for my english idk

Thanks !

As far as I can tell some layers (such as "atlantique") are totally empty. I cannot explain how it happened though but this is a very big image which even on my rather decent PC (3Gz Core I5, 32GB) has significant display update delays.

Looking at the "A4" layer, it looks like you are trying to produce a mural that will be 135cm wide, at 300PPI. This is way too much because you don't look at a meter-wide mural from as close you would an A4 sheet,so you can significantly reduce your image size in pixels and decrease the resolution to 150 or even 100PPI. There are also many layers that are as wide as the image and don't need to (the "ocean" ones).

The maps layer group  are definitely gone and the illustrations layer group from pngwing.com look like they might have had an offset applied sometime, effectively gone as well.

The text is strange, using ofnuts text-info plugin, there is a lot of formatting. https://i.imgur.com/NAAXjio.jpg  Usually denotes a lot of text in 'filled mode'. For a simple text layer it should look like this. https://i.imgur.com/OXmm7fJ.jpg  A weird image, everything seems to have a selection, however as you found, you can get the text back by juggling the text box, one way, dynamic > fixed > dynamic works.  https://i.imgur.com/a6IUMQm.mp4

It is possible to batch 'fix' (not a perfect fix, all that strange formatting remains) There is an old plugin changefont.py (attached) which works.
The text layer-group I got is here  https://u.pcloud.link/publink/show?code=...JlS73rvFFk  1.4 MB
You will need to move that into position.

..if you will want to know how I got there:

about 4 minutes.

ohh thanks a lot ! i will use your file, and if the problem happens again after i added new cities, i'll use the way u showed in the video

for the rest of the layers, i'll reput them in the image manually, but at least i wont have to do it for cities...

i'll copy the project (btw in a /2 divided size i think) and do this... i hope it won't delete others things later or i would be forced to stop the project lol

but all this thing is really weird...

if another people has a solution, the subject isn't close don't hesitate to answer bc i don't know when i will restart all this ahah

thanks again

Just wondering how you are adding text layers in that cities layer group ?

I would avoid duplicating an existing layer, then editing the text.
Add new layers directly using the text tool.
