Select tool inconsistent

w10 latest insider preview
graphics controller:  Nvidia GForce GTX 1070

Gimp 2.10.14

if i start gimp with a new canvas
and left click on the ellipse select tool
I can create a selection and when I select the Bucket Fill tool, the selection remains intact and the region fills

Now if, while the above new filled selection exists
I left click on the rectangle select tool
and create a selection, the rectangular section is created
BUT if i then select the Bucket Fill, immediately I lose the ellipse and the rectangle.

IN ADDITION
if i start gimp with a new canvas
and left click on the rectangle select tool
I can NOT create a selection

should not both these tools work the same?

Do you have the mode for both of the selection tools set to "Replace the current selection"? (the mode settings, at least with the way I have GIMP here seem to be independent for the selection tools).

Do you see any warning/error messages in the status line underneath the image?

In addition don't forget that in Gimp 2.10 you have to "commit" the selection (Enter, double-click).
