  Slow Layer view
Posted by: HEINRICH_VON_KLEIST - 04-02-2021, 10:04 AM - Forum: General questions - Replies (7)

Hello everyone,

i have decided to take the step and leave Windows for good and use linux also in my professionial work as a graphics designer. As i understand it, GIMP is the software to replace my Photoshop that i am using under Win.

GIMP looks great and feels good, but when i open files with layers and change between them it always takes a while till the chosen layer has been built up. Since the layers are one of my most-used features this is a bit annoying. This occurs also under windows and also under very strong processing units.

Has anyone experience with this. Am i the only one who gets disturbed by this? Is GIMP simply that much slower than PS? I just don't think so. This held me away from professionally using LINUX and GIMP since 5 Years and now i decided to just ask. Maybe there can be something done about it.

My files are rather large (600dpi) and they must be since they are designed for offset-print. And the have a lot of layers. Up to 50 sometimes and more.

Okay, i hope there is no one annoyed by my question since i am really looking forward to use open-source as a profesional.
Greetings and thanks in advance
Heinrich

Updated to GIMP 2.10.24 Cannot install GMIC plug in
Posted by: rdhceo - 04-01-2021, 06:59 AM - Forum: General questions - Replies (4)

Hello,

Show Mercy upon me, as far as being a programmer, I am Not.  Relatively new Gimp user, been Photoshopping for years.  Opened Gimp today, it said there was an update available, without  hesitation - updated it to version 2.10.24.   Downloaded the gmic_2.9.6_gimp2.10_win64 files.  Found a YouTube video with an English gentleman that instructed how to install the 2.10 version of the GMIC files.  Tried installing them per the video, no luck.  Was getting an error message while opening Gimp.

"The procedure entry point g_memdup2. could not be located in the dynamic link library C:\Program Files\GIMP 2\bin\ligbobject-2.0-0.dll"

Tried uninstalling, restarting the machine, and deleting the versions I had installed without success.  Even tried a Windows system restore to a checkpoint before today, but the newest 2.10 version was still in my program folder, so no dice.  Was hoping I could find the older version of Gimp that I had, but did not succeed.  Tried a couple solutions I found on the web, but my lack of coding skills likely sent that over the transom.  Praying there's a simple solution.  For your consideration, I thank you.

  Schannel Event ID 36887 Error
Posted by: Mr Wolf - 03-31-2021, 03:27 PM - Forum: Windows - Replies (5)

Hi all!
I noticed two errors in my Event Viewer regarding Schannel with Event ID 36887, one with error:
Fatal alert received: 40
and the other one with error:
Fatal alert received: 70

After some investigations, I discovered they seem related to Gimp: I get those errors whenever I start Gimp, but, oddly enough, in the computer in which I noticed them first, I also get them at boot.

I'm running Gimp 2.10.22 on Windows 7 64 bit.

I also tried to install Gimp 2.10.22 on another machine with Windows 7 64 bit and I get the same error, but only with code 40 and only when I start Gimp, but not at boot.

I don't have the same errors on a machine with Windows 10 64 bit.

I made some searches, but I haven't well understood the meaning of those errors. Perhaps Gimp is trying to connect to some server to find updates?

Did anyone notice those errors, too?

Thanks in advance.

  Flip Book

Hi, I am not sure this is the right place to ask. How do you meet your Flipbook needs ? Is there any FOSS software to do it ?

I need it sparingly, 2-3 books at the maximum. If there is any safe and reliable option, do share. Thanks.

How can I leave a selection as is when I change layer?
Posted by: makois - 03-30-2021, 02:03 PM - Forum: General questions - Replies (4)

I'm a beginner at GIMP living in Japan Smile

Normally, If you make a selection then change the current layer, the selection remains.
However, If you make a selection of the whole layer(Ctrl+A)(A) then change the current layer(A to B), the selection changes to the changed layer's whole size(B).
How can I leave the selection size as is?
( Please see the attached image. )

Environment:

  • Gimp 2.10.14
  • macOS Catalina

Merging images, applying color saving in color and in black & white?
Posted by: tudvari - 03-30-2021, 05:12 AM - Forum: Scripting questions - Replies (6)

I'm making achievements for my game, and I would like to make an automated process to save a lot of time instead of doing it manually.

So I'd like to make a GIMP script doing this for me Big Grin But I'm complete noobie with it. Could you help me please?

The inputs of this process would be

  • one rectangular opaque background image (i.e. 200x200 PNG)
  • Color A, (i.e. in hex)
  • Color B, (i.e. in hex)
  • and multiple same sized, rectangular, transparent foreground images. (i.e. 200x200 PNG)

And the process would do this for every foreground image:
  1.  Start with the background image.
  2.  Merge the foreground image with Color A filter applied, and also with an offset from the middle.
  3.  Merge the foreground image with Color B filter applied, in the middle.
  4.  Save the result in a file.
  5.  Apply a black & white filter and save the result in a file.
So the output would be for example multiple 200x200 PNG images, each of it having a colored and a black & white version

Could you help me please? Smile

It looks like the webpage at file:///C:/Users/leeho/OneDrive/Pictures/CATOLOG%20CONES%20PAGE.pdf might be having issues, or it may have moved permanently to a new web address.

Exif, XMP, IPTC

What are these values which prompt to get added to when exporting a file as PNG ? Is it safe to keep them ticked ? Any private info will be added ? Thanks.

Automatically converting new tiff to jpg
Posted by: schuttp - 03-27-2021, 04:25 PM - Forum: Extending the GIMP - Replies (1)

Hi Everyone!

I work for a museum, Sharlot Hall Museum, which has a large archive of historical photos stored in tiff format and we want to be able to convert them "on the fly" to .jpg format while at the same time adding a watermark that protects our copyright on the images.  Is it possible to create a script on our Windows Domain Server, or could be on a dedicated PC as well, that would automatically convert a any new new tiff files to a jpg and save it in another folder?

Thanks for your assistance!

Patrick
