  Tiny tiny tiny toolbox icons
Posted by: HavingTooMuchFun - 11-09-2020, 03:03 PM - Forum: Windows - Replies (7)

I've been using 2.8.22 on a Mac desktop, and just did a download of 2.10.22 on a PC laptop… and instead of the wonderful tool bar I'm used to, I've got these itsy-bitsy little icons, most of which actually represent several functions that I'm used to clicking on directly. This is just unusable! I figured out how to increase the size of the toolbox, but it isn't making the icons any bigger. Can someone PLEASE show me how to change what I've got into something I don't need to get new stronger reading glasses to use?

Secondarily, I REALLY hate this dark gray, it's very hard to read tiny white text against; can I possibly get bigger text on a light background? I've increased the base size of everything in the system to 150%, but, as warned, it doesn't affect the size of anything in certain programs, including this one.

Help with Alpha Channels/Light Map for Game Objects
Posted by: Harmonie - 11-08-2020, 10:50 PM - Forum: General questions - Replies (1)

Hello, all. I've been a user of PhotoShop Elements for, like, 15 years, and am coming to GIMP for this particular issue, seeing as PhotoShop Elements does not have this capability and I do not have money to upgrade to a full version. So... while I am no newbie to photo editing programs, GIMP is new and confusing to me, as is this issue I'm posting which is a whole 'nother mess. Lol

I will start by saying I am a The Sims modder and that's what this is for.

Christmas/the holidays are coming up and I want to create some cute holiday light stuff for my game. In order to do so, I need to understand alpha layers and light maps. I asked another modder for help a year ago, and I have a firm understanding of how to do everything related to coding and all, I just don't understand the photo editing alpha layer part of it.

In the modding program, the DDS file is considered a light map, and the light map appears black with bright areas where things light up.

That seemed simple enough, BUT it is achieved through alpha layers, and I never could quite figure this out. The modder in question gave me this advice, but I couldn't make sense of it:

"If you're in the channel panel, click add or new channel and it will automatically add Alpha. Red, Blue, Green channels should already be there. After that, copy your blue channel to the alpha channel, so that your alpha channel is NOT all black."

I think her advice was referring to PS, but GIMP has an alpha feature, so I wonder if anyone here could make sense of it? I don't understand alpha layers at all. I have never worked with them. I've only been modding for a year, as well.

How did you organize your archive?
Posted by: Konskoo - 11-08-2020, 05:44 PM - Forum: Watercooler - Replies (4)

How did you organize your archive?

How do you store files? What hardware do you use? What software do you use?

How do you catalog the files in your archive? What software do you use?

I want my archive to be reliable. I want to find files in archive quickly. I want to use automated archiving and cataloging tools, schedule. I want to make few copies of archive automatically. I want to store copies of archive in different locations. I run Windows 10 Home 64-bit.

Can I bring back the old color dialog?
Posted by: Shadowblitz16 - 11-08-2020, 05:44 PM - Forum: General questions - No Replies

Is there a way to bring back the old color dialog?

I find it really dumb that I have to switch tabs just to adjust rgb and hex values.

here is what I am talking about

  Add watermark to image
Posted by: meetdilip - 11-08-2020, 04:22 PM - Forum: General questions - Replies (2)

Hi, what is the best way to add watermark to logos and banners ? I would like to add the text " meetdilip " while supplying demo copies. It would be nice to make sure that the art work does not loose its attraction either.

Seamless Tiles and Gimp 2.10 symmetry mode
Posted by: rich2005 - 11-08-2020, 12:19 PM - Forum: Tutorials and tips - Replies (1)

Making a seamless pattern in Gimp 2.10 is a little easier now using symmetry painting.

Examples top to bottom: 1 - 2 -3

1. It is worth making a template xcf file. This one for a 400 x 400 pix tile, make a 3 x3 canvas ( ie. 1200 x 1200 pix) with some guides. Add a 'window' overlay if you want. Set the symmetry painting offsets to the tile size 400 for this one.

 2. No need to use the mosaic filter if you can paint in the shapes yourself, just make sure the lines connect.  I made a temporary layer, filled with solid-noise, to give the shapes

 3. Painted over to create the seamless pattern (joints) taking care at the edges.

Examples top to bottom 4 -5 -6

 4. Adding some shape and another 'working'  layer. A selection inside the borders and a gradient fill in one of the shaped modes. Then merged with the pattern layer.

 5. Duplicated the pattern layer for a bumpmap. Added some RGB noise to try and give some texture. Gaussian blurred it.

 6. Bump Mapped the pattern layer against the blurred copy layer.

Select, copy, paste as a new image for the tile...and it is still seamless as:

  Image Menu Confusion
Posted by: Athugarius - 11-08-2020, 10:21 AM - Forum: General questions - Replies (2)

I don't know if this happens to anybody else, but when I try to draw or hold my drawing pencil a circle appears on screen. The circle fills up, and a bar comes up. I think it's called an Image Menu, but it has options that you can click. However, I don't really need this. Is this because of the type of drawing pencil I have, or is it just a part of GIMP? And if so, can I disable it somehow?

Newbie: Creating Arrows & Boxes, Merging Images
Posted by: jdanniel - 11-07-2020, 02:18 PM - Forum: General questions - Replies (7)

Hello, everyone.  I am a total, complete, absolute GIMP newbie, and just installed 2.10.22 on Windows 10 64-bit.

There isn’t much I do with graphics.  I know how to do a few things with paint.net, and now want to learn how to do those things with GIMP.

I’d like to learn how to create arrows with different colors and thicknesses, as well as boxes.  I also want to learn how to attach two different images together into one.  I can do both of these things with paint.net, but now it’s time to learn how to do them with GIMP.

I’ve attached a sample image of what I want to do.  I was hoping someone might be able to direct me to tutorials that show how to do this.  I’m sure creating arrows and boxes are pretty simple, but I’m still trying to get familiar with the interface.  A tutorial or video that demonstrates these things would be great.

Thank you very much!  J. Danniel

  'Image -> Guides' not available
Posted by: silverAvion - 11-06-2020, 05:49 PM - Forum: General questions - Replies (2)

I've got 2.10.20 installed on Win7 64-bit laptop.  Was following along with a typically great 'Davies Media Design' Youtube tutorial when he selected 'Image/Guides/New Guide (by percent)'.  That's when I realized I do not have a 'Guides' selection on my 'Image' menu.  I installed 2.10.22 but it is the same.  Made sure 'View/Show Guides' was checked in case the menu item was dependent on it, no change.

Thoughts?
