  Fading around irregular image
Posted by: jediguitar101@yahoo.com - 08-10-2018, 09:09 AM - Forum: General questions - Replies (11)

Could someone please link me to a tutorial that shows how to create an image fade around something other than the geometric templates found in the "blend" tool? My search results keep giving me the same blend process.

  Could it be my computer?
Posted by: sallyanne - 08-08-2018, 11:50 AM - Forum: General questions - Replies (11)

Since I used gimp last - this time yesterday now. I can not open any images in gimp except native files. I cannot save them either except again as xcf's.
I thought maybe something was wrong with my gimp so I deleted it. Installed a new one. Restarted my computer and nothing has changed. A scan doesn't show any viruses. What could be the problem?

  Eraser not working on mask
Posted by: handypandy1 - 08-08-2018, 10:27 AM - Forum: General questions - Replies (7)

This is driving me demented.
Adding colour to a b/w photo. I've done hundreds of these in the past, so the method is pretty much second nature, however............

1) Open b/w image
2) Select a colour I want to use
3) Add a new layer of this colour and add to that a black transparent layer mask (set to overlay)
4) Erase over the mask where I want the colour

Nothing is happening. Eraser brush opacity is at 100% (any brush, makes no difference). The eraser procedure shows in the history but nothing has happened.

Strangely, if I select black as the colour, there is a low opacity effect even though settings are at 100, but with any other colour.....nothing.

I've tried different images, even ones that I have done successfully previously....nothing.

What am I missing please?

Unpacking archived Gimp resources - scripts - brushes - plugins
Posted by: rich2005 - 08-07-2018, 01:11 PM - Forum: Tutorials and tips - Replies (1)

Windows file manager is not the most wonderful tool around when it comes to handling Gimp 2.10 resources.

First there is the Gimp profile location which is in a hidden folder. Then basic Windows only opens zip archives.

Improve the situation with a 2-pane file manager. There are plenty around. A search and I hit this straight away.

https://windowsreport.com/dual-pane-file...indows-10/

So a demo with what I might use, both free-to-use software.

7-ZIP - very basic as a file manager, which might be a good thing https://www.7-zip.org/

DoubleCommander - a little more sophisticated - https://doublecmd.sourceforge.io/

Demonstrating with various archive types

First regular Windows and a zip file then 7-zip, finally Double commander.

  Change Layer Color
Posted by: Howitser - 08-07-2018, 12:47 PM - Forum: Extending the GIMP - Replies (2)

I'm using 2.10.4 on a Windows 10 machine, trying to do colorizations of old photographs.  Is there a way I can change the color I have set for a layer without either deleting & recreating or erasing & redoing it?  Lets say I've made a layer and colored a shirt blue.  That's the only thing on that layer, is there a way I can easily change it to another color?  I thought I would be able to go into the color itself & change the RGB settings, but I can't see a way.

Hope this is clear!  Thanks in advance!

Howard

How to use GIMP 2.10 tutorial for beginners

Found the above in Youtube. Excellent tutorial for beginners.

3rd lesson on preference is an eye opener for me. Now I dont have to use the slider to change the tool size. Can now use the mouse scroll instead!

One good way to jump start in learning GIMP via that tutorial.

Enjoy!

  Transparent Background Troubles
Posted by: sarahladdnewton - 08-06-2018, 04:50 PM - Forum: General questions - Replies (3)

I am using GIMP 2.10.4. I am trying to create a logo with a transparent background and I think that I know how to make the background transparent, but after I do, I can't draw on it. I can draw if I don't try and make it transparent. This is what I have been doing to make it transparent:

First, I open a new window. Then I go to "File" and select "New" from the menu. In the "create a new image" box, click the arrow next to "px" and select inches from the drop down menu. I enter my desired print size next to "width" and "height" and select "ok".
Then I go over to the right side of the window where the layer is listed and I right click on the black square with the word "background" next to it. I select "Edit later attributes", I set the opacity to zero, and I select ok.

After I do all this, I try to draw a line, and I can't.

Please help!
