  adding text
Posted by: chris64 - 08-08-2023, 01:59 AM - Forum: General questions - Replies (1)

I know how to add text the simple way. Let me explain how I would do it. Then I will ask either:
Why this method now longer works and how to adjust the settings so it does.
or
Do you have a suggestion of how to add text that will give me the added benefits.

I’ll back up.
I first type out my text in a text software such as MS Word. I do this so that I can use the spell checker. I can also save this as a file. This way, modifications to the text are easy to do. I would copy this text (ctrl+c). I would then open up Gimp. I would add text in the usual way. However, instead of typing it, I would paste it.

This no longer works. My new copy of Gimp will not recognise text in the copy and paste function. Is there a setting in Gimp that can be changed? Perhaps there is a setting in Gimp that can be set so that it will recognize text in the copy and paste function. In my new copy of Gimp this toggle is not set properly but it was set properly in my old copy of Gimp. Huh

  The End of Internet Immortality
Posted by: Tas_mania - 08-07-2023, 11:04 PM - Forum: Watercooler - Replies (12)

I have a few friends who have died and still have blogsites and videos online. Now g00gle have announced that all accounts that are inactive for 2 years will be terminated. Nobody knows the passwords for most of these sites so eventually they will disappear forever.

I predicted this would have to happen because the dominant video hosting site would eventually use more electricity than a lot of countries. Electricity that is mostly paid for with advertising revenue.

This makes the internet a resource for those living today but unaware of how problems were solved in the past.

  Gimp 2.10.34 won't install
Posted by: Averroes - 08-07-2023, 04:39 PM - Forum: Windows - Replies (3)

The installer gets to extracting twain.exe  and then gives an error that "setup was not completed. please correct the problem and run setup again."

Originally I was trying to update a previous version and got this error. In frustration I deleted the old application to install the newer one and now I can't install any version.

Help?

  Automatically (re)construct an image from overlapping parts?
Posted by: Freso - 08-07-2023, 11:08 AM - Forum: General questions - Replies (1)

I’ve seen the “Reconstructing an image from overlapping parts” tutorial and similar ones but I was wondering whether there were any tools to automate (or semi-automate) this workflow, similar to how e.g. Hugin will allow you to automate/assist with a lot of busywork with stitching photos together?

It feels like "broken" images/screenshots/etc. would be simpler since there should be sections of images with 1:1 matches that should be machine-detectable, no? But I haven’t been able to find anything. Anything I search for leads me to tutorials like the one linked here or tutorials for software like Hugin or other panorama/photo stitching software.

(Oh, and I know that I have my Gimp version set to 2.99 here, but I have both 2.10 and 2.99 installed, so something that works for either would be fine, as well as 3rd party (but preferably still free/libre) software.)

  Convert opacity value to grayscale luminosity
Posted by: Purple_ghoost - 08-06-2023, 08:46 PM - Forum: General questions - Replies (3)

Hello,

I would like to use Gimp to prepare files for riso printing and for this I need to convert each individual color layer from opacity (x%) to greyscale ((100-x)% luminosity).

Precisely, this is the conversion I need:
- [color] at 100% opacity -> black
- [color] at 75% opacity -> grey (25% luminosity)
- [color] at 50% opacity -> grey (50% luminosity)
- [color] at 31 % opacity -> grey (69% luminosity)
etc.

And [color] can be replaced by any existing color. I have one layer per color.

Would you know how to do this? In Photoshop, there is a shortcut to do this at seen here: https://youtu.be/UrFq5KliP04?t=263
This is exactly what I would like to reproduce.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Star Help Enhancing Ancient Manuscript
Posted by: MTW613 - 08-06-2023, 07:57 PM - Forum: General questions - Replies (5)

I've got a ~1000 year old manuscript (ink on vellum) that needs to be enhanced so its easily legible when printed in black and white.  I'm including an image from a representative page:
Image

I've played around with the GMIC filters and produced the second image at the link above, but I'm hoping we can get it cleaner (it's super dark and all the dirt/damage is still there). In theory, the ink should be a different color set then the dirt/damage and so I was hoping it would be possible to do something like:
1) Use the color picker to identify the ink color
2) Use some tool to select everything within a certain margin of error of that ink color
3) lift it and add it to a white background

I don't know if that's possible or how to do it.  If anyone can help with a guide on what to do (all ideas are welcome) it would be much appreciated.

thanks!

  How to update fonts ?
Posted by: jacques_duflos - 08-06-2023, 02:51 AM - Forum: General questions - Replies (4)

Hi there,
I am working on a project in gimp, I am using a font that I modify sometimes with the software fontforge (it's part of the project). The font is in .local/share/fonts/. The folder GIMP_FOLDER/fonts is empty. The program LibreOffice acknowledges the changes instantly. But Gimp won't. How do I get gimp to re-load/update the fonts ?

  How to write Chinese 2
Posted by: renemolbo - 08-05-2023, 09:56 AM - Forum: General questions - Replies (6)

In my first post you helped me figuring out how to do the character writing square. Now it is time to add characters and I am facing several roadblocks.

I am using GIMP on an Mac M2 Air, so that might be a reason for the first problem.
1) I have fonts available in Microsoft Word that are not available in GIMP. The fonts I want to use are listed after Wingdings in Word (which is not where they should be alphabetically listed). I am planning on using either BiauKaiTC or Kaiti TC.
How do I get these fonts to be available in GIMP?

2) I want the character to be drawn with a black edge only. How do I do that?

3) I want to fill the strokes of the characters that are being drawn at that step. It is a problem to just use the filler when the a part is directly connected to the first part, but not to be drawn before the next step. How do I put a "block" on where the filler can fill up to?

4) How can I make thin lines with arrows to show where to start, turn and end the stroke?

I am attaching a picture that gives an idea of problem 2) and 3). I want a different approach, because I want the arrows as well. I hope the picture explains some of the complications.

  Webpage text is tiny
Posted by: grits - 08-03-2023, 06:44 PM - Forum: Gimp-Forum.net - Replies (3)

I use my phone to read new posts, sent via a, feed reader. When I click through the reader to the, actual page the text is tiny. I have to turn my phone to landscape view, then do lots of scrolling.

Is there a way to fix this, on my end or the web manager?
