GIMP Freezes when doing certain actions.
Posted by: Mills - 07-15-2019, 02:52 PM - Forum: General questions - Replies (6)

First of all, thanks a lot to all the people who made GIMP possible, it is a great software!.

I saw this question around the internet but I did not find any solution/explanation.

Since 2.10, GIMP just freezes (sometimes about 1 minute) when you use a tool for the first time (like for example picking one colour, or selecting a rectangle).

After that first time, it works as expected.

Now, I'll post my specs, but don't say my computer is slow (and thats the problem), because it will run as expected after the first freeze. I can scale, colorize... (and all the effects you imagine) "big" images (2048x2048) with no freezing or any trouble at all.

CPU Intel Atom Z3735F 1.33-1.7 GHz
RAM 2GB
OS Windows 8.1 (x86).

I repeat, neither CPU nor RAM are the problem, because while GIMP is unresponsive, cpu and ram are not showing anything wrong, (I can for example, write in this forum with no trouble).

Could windows 8.1 be the cause?

I could go back to GIMP 2.8 which had no issues, but I don't want to  Cool .

Thanks a lot!

  Uncurling a curved image
Posted by: ThumbOne - 07-14-2019, 04:56 AM - Forum: General questions - Replies (1)

I'm keen to uncurl an image. By which I mean I have this attached image and I'd like to make of this a straight blade.

Intuition suggests I could trace the border and then trace a path down the central axis and apply some transform that straightens the central axis while holding the image in proportion, uncurling the curve so to speak. But that's a pipe dream perhaps.

So I've looked and searched and best I've found so far is the cage transform. But it's both very slow, very fiddly and hard to get a nice transform with very odd unintuitive responses to pushing points around IMHO.

Is there a simpler/better way, either in GIMP or already scripted, which can uncurl an image like this one?

  Stroking rotated images
Posted by: Kirribilli - 07-13-2019, 10:56 PM - Forum: General questions - Replies (3)

I've rotated (at arbitrary angles) a bunch of images for a collage.
I'm unable to stroke the edges of these tilted images.  I can't select the tilted images themselves, only the rectangular boundaries when they were first placed on the canvas.
Thank you for any help.  I've spent hours trying to solve this.

  Water drop pattern

How can I make this water drop pattern in GIMP ?

I would need it in top down view.

At a loss on multi layered masks application
Posted by: plumbergp - 07-11-2019, 03:13 AM - Forum: General questions - Replies (2)

Say I have 5 layered masks with color changes in each mask on different parts of the image.

If I set each layer mask to 30% transparency, I can see the effect of all the 5 changes.

But the final colors will not be the ones I selected in the layered masks.

Wondering how to correct for this.

Like to see an example of multi layered masks as the final colors will be distorted.

Thanks.

How to undo changes after saving the file?
Posted by: plumbergp - 07-11-2019, 01:20 AM - Forum: General questions - Replies (2)

I tested changing the color of skin in a photo. Saved it.

Reopened the file, could not undo the color change I did earlier via "undo paintbrush" in the edit.

AA
Possible to undo or revert to original part of an edited image AFTER saving and closing the file?

BB
How to revert to original unedited part of an image beside using layer mask via changing the background color?

Thanks.

Applying changes to lots of files
Posted by: SlyCooperReloadCoded - 07-09-2019, 07:16 PM - Forum: General questions - Replies (12)

I've been working on a few projects that involve applying the same changes to lots (hundreds or even thousands) of PNG images.  I need to keep the exact same file names, keep them as PNG, and make the exact same changes to all of them.

It would be really helpful if I could easily apply these changes to all of the PNG images at once.  Is there any way to do this without having to watch hours of scripting tutorials or any other convoluted processes?

Cropped Image Won't Print in Center of Page
Posted by: AceMcHammer - 07-08-2019, 10:21 PM - Forum: Older Gimp versions (2.8, 2.6....) - Replies (2)

I had this cropped image that I could not get to print in the center of a letter size 8 1/2 x 11 page no matter what settings I seemed to alter. The Image always came out printed onto the top left hand corner of the page. The printer is an HP OfficeJet 8600. In the File/Print dialogue, then in the "Image Settings" tab it looked like this:

As you can see in the "Preview" window it shows the image centered in the middle of the page.

I finally figured out that it was the page margins that needed to be edited. When I look at the page margins they were all set to Zero like this:

What I had to do was go to File/Page Setup and set the page margins to match the image "Position" settings in the File/Print/ Image Settings tab like this:

Then the image finally printed in the center of the page. I want to mention also that checking the "Ignore Page Margins" box in the File/Print Image Settings tab had no effect on centering the image before I edited the Page Margins settings in the File/Page Setup section.

The "Ignore Page Margins" box is underlined in Red:

It seems that this is a bug. Checking the "Ignore Page Margins" box should set the position according to the "Positions" settings dialogue regardless of what the "Page Margins" are set to for the image, cropped or not.
