Linear light questions |

I have some questions about linear workspace.
I followed the instructions here and determined that Gimp 2.10 does indeed use linear calculations:
https://ninedegreesbelow.com/photography...ssing.html
That's great! I already knew this, sort of, but I have some issues understanding what is going on.
These tests work in both perceptual sRGB and Linear light. What happens when I change the precision to 'linear light'? Is it something that becomes embedded in any file I export? I have also noticed that bit depth makes no difference, so why would I need to change it to higher than 8 bits if I just want correct linear maths?
Why does every guide I read about linear light insist that more than 8 bits are needed if I want to use linear light calculations? Obviously this is not a strict requirement if Gimp can do linear calculations in perceptual sRGB and 8 bit.

Smooth strokes without weight |

Is there any way to draw smooth lines without adding weight in smooth strokes? The delay it causes between the brush and cursor makes it pretty frustrating to use. And I emphazise the word "draw", I am not asking about afterwards edit.

Text editing single character in 2.10 - default |

Can someone tell me the best way to edit text in 2.10?
For example
I have a text layer with a single number "9" in it, at size 28px with a custom colour. I click on the layer, select "edit text on canvas" and delete the number "9" and replace it with a "4". The number 4 is at size 18px in black.
Is there a way of keeping the size and colour I had chosen instead of reverting to a default each time?

Unable to install gimp-plugin-registry since upgrading to Mint 19 |

I recently upgraded to Mint 19 with a clean install. Since then, I have been unable to load the gimp-plugin-registry via Synaptic. This appears to be linked to another problem, which is that I cannot switch from the X.Org X server - Nouveau display driver to the recommended Nvidia driver 390.
When I try to install the GIMP Plugin Registry via Synaptic, the first error message I get says that I have two broken packages on my system. When I use the 'Fix Broken Packages' option from the menu, nothing happens. Clicking on the 'Broken' option in the filters shows two packages: libnvidia-ifr1-390 and nvidia-driver-390. These are both shown with red flags against them. Attempts to reinstall these results in the following error:
'E: /var/cache/apt/archives/libnvidia-gl-390_390.48-0ubuntu3_amd64.deb: new libnvidia-gl-390:amd64 package pre-installation script subprocess returned error exit status 2'
I also sometimes get another error:
'E: Internal Error, No file name for libnvidia-ifr1-390:amd64'
When I checked the Drivers, the system shows that the nvidia-driver-390 is in use, but this is not the case. Running inxi -G in the terminal produces the following:
$ inxi -G
Graphics: Card: NVIDIA GM107 [GeForce GTX 750 Ti]
Display Server: x11 (X.Org 1.19.6 )
drivers: nouveau (unloaded: modesetting,fbdev,vesa)
Resolution: 1920x1080@60.00hz
OpenGL: renderer: NV117 version: 4.3 Mesa 18.0.5
I had neither of these issues when running Mint 18, so this appears to be something inherent in the 19 release.
Any thoughts about how to resolve the two faults would be appreciated.

image resize including canvas |

I've made a picture with a few layers and then flatten the image. Now, I want to resize the image to a smaller on with the scale tool (I filled in new smaller dimensions). The result is that the image is scaled but the canvas stayed in the original dimensions (not scaled). Do I have to crop the canvas or is there another solution? Thanks in advance for an answer.

Gimp constantly freezes up when using Wacom tablet |

Hello!
I've recently switched over to Arch Linux. Often, when I'm using my Wacom tablet in Gimp, Gimp locks up to where I can only use my tablet in the main window. Clicking on any other Gimp windows (layers, tools) with both the tablet and the mouse gives no response. Is there anything I can do to fix this, or is this a bug?

Textures - Where do you find them? |

Hi there,
I came across a great website that provides pictures of all the different types of camoflage in the world. You can search by country:
http://camopedia.org/index.php?title=Main_Page
I was hoping to find a picture of the type of color that US soldiers used during the Vietnam war - a type of olive green. However, because it is not considered camoflage, this site does not have a copy of it.
Does anyone know of any other websites similar to Camopedia?
If you wanted to use Gimp to make a US Army uniform, where would you go to find the right color scheme to copy?

Basic Texturing for games - What are all the different files for? |

Hi everyone,
I am currently working on trying to retexture the uniforms in this picture:
https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/comp...-prefix=en
The game is called "Company of Heroes". Effectively I just want to change the soldiers top so that it is a green color - the same color as the pants and helmet. I am trying to make them look more like Vietnam era US soldiers.
I have changed the color but ingame the soldiers appear quite dark. It is obvious that I am doing something wrong.
The original file is in .rgt format but I change it to .dds to edit it and then convert if back. There is a whole list of files that seem to relate the the uniform:
tex_al_rifleman.dds
tex_al_rifleman_dirt.dds
tex_al_rifleman_glossiness.dds
tex_al_rifleman_normalize_sharpen_normalmap.dds
tex_al_rifleman_normalmap.dds
tex_al_rifleman_normalmap_no_sharpen.dds
tex_al_rifleman_normalmap_normalize_sharpen.dds
tex_al_rifleman_normalmap_sharpen.dds
tex_al_rifleman_occlusion.dds
tex_al_rifleman_specular.dds
These files all look similar - but some have the uniform in black, others in all white.
At the moment I have tried just editing the tex_al_rifleman.dds and then exporting that. But I thought that editing the one file may be the reason that the soldier appears kind of dark - or as if a shadow is cast upon him.
So I tried editing this file and then adding all the rest as a layer - still same problem. Also, is there any way to tell which file should be the bottom layer and which should be the middle and top?
I mean some of these files just show the soldiers uniform all colored white while others show the uniform all colored black...
Any advice?
