As a long time and almost daily user of GIMP, I decided to take a look at the new version. My first issue was that the eraser was not working on a transparent layer as I was intending adding colour to an old B/W pic.

I thought it may be something I might have to re-learn a bit so, being impatient to do the pic, I decided to uninstall and go back to 2.8 for the time being.  Oh dear, so now I cannot install either version. During the installation, an error message pops up..."Egads... installation failed... error code 0x80040c01" and I don't seem to be able to find a solution.

From what I have seen, it appears to be a Chrome issue, tried uninstalling and using another browser to d/load but the same result. I'm at a loss, not techy at all, definitely a plug and play merchant. I'm so gutted.

I can't find a way to to do a bump map.

In the Bump Map dialogue I can't change the option that says Bump Map RedLayer-3 ([Untitled]). It is not a drop-down or anything.
Me being stupid? Or a bug?

If I create a layer group, is it possible to modify all layers in this group at one time? For example I want to adjust curves the same to every layer in a layer group.

In GIMP 2.10 UI looks a bit different than formerly - we've got an image tab on the top (this is how I call it, see the screenshot) to switch between multiple files.
I searched for an answer to a question if it could be hidden because it wastes some workspace. But seems it's impossible.
So I want to ask if someone would like to write a script that would do this and save ourselves some screen space. I won't do this because I completely don't know how to code.

I just recently downloaded the latest version of Gimp 2.10.2. Everything says it can work with 16 bit files, but every time I try to open a tiff file (either by direct opening or from LR) I get the following:

Warning:
The image you are loading is 16 bits per channel. Gimp can only handle 8 bit, so it will be converted for you. Information will be lost because of this conversion.

Running it on Windows 10 64 bit. Any help would be appreciated and I do apologize if the topic has been previously discussed in a previous thread.

Just downloaded the beautify plugin. Extracted it and put the whole folder into the plugins folder (My personal gimp folder)  I had a look on Pixls before and saw it was working in 2.10 still but it isn't showing up at all in my filters?


1. I never saw a 'new' plugin being added when gimp started up.
2. There were no error messages.
3. I have closed gimp twice now and restarted. I haven't shut the computer down yet - will be back with the result.
4. I know it hasn't been updated or I think it hasn't since 2012 - 2.6 is talked about in the read me. Am I correct that it should still work?

EDIT: don't know what I have done but it is still not showing

Hey everyone. I am new to GIMP and I have been having a problem every since I started using GIMP a few days ago. Every time I go to add a drop shadow it never works. Well I have figured out it is because I need to clear my selection. The problem is select > none is grayed out and CTRL+SHIFT+A does nothing. I am attaching an image because I know that is a terrible explanation. In the image though you can see what is selected. I need to deselect that so I can add my drop shadow, but I can't deselect it. When I select a different layer it will deselect, but every time I go to the layer where I want the drop shadow it selects the same thing and I can't deselect it. Sorry I know that is a bad explanation, but hopefully someone gets what I am asking.

I hope someone can help me 
I have been working for some time now with Gimp so I kinda know how it works,
But since yesterday I got this weird problem.

Gimp does not export files anymore.
When I go for export or export as, it gives me the pop up for my directory. 
When giving my work a name and an extension, like I always do, and click export ... it doesn't.


It doesn't do anything anymore. I can close the pop-up though by clicking on the cross, but that's about it.


What did I do?
Hoping it would help, I uninstalled the software, and re-installed it.
Nothing. Tried it again.
raised my work memory (might help huh)
nope.
Re-installed it again.
restarted the computer 
etc ... etc ...
Well, after all that trying and searching I think it is time to find some help.

oh, but the way ... meanwhile I had it also updated to the latest version, but ... nothing ... :-)

I am using a png file and trying to adapt it as there is a spelling mistake - just 2dn needs to turn to 2nd but I cannot highlight copy paste or otherwise manipulate the letters into the correct spelling.

What am I doing wrong?

I cut and then paste but then when I go back for the other letter it either disappears or sometimes it tells me there is nothing to cut, except there is.

I suppose it must be another layer

I just want to move some pixels from one place to another and cannot do it

Wasted an hour so far

Pinta is completely dead in 18.04 so have no choice but to try and work out the notorious Gimp.

Hello. I'm simply trying to add a drop shadow to a layer, but it will not work. I do have an alpha channel on my layer. GIMP allows me to go through the process of adding the shadow through the dialogue box, but it just wont show up. I've searched this thread and tried Google searches, but I cannot work out what I might be doing wrong. I've tried Flatpak installation and from the Software centre. I do notice there is no option to allow resizing of canvas after the shadow is applied. Might this be something to do with it?

I think this is a simple query that shouldn't really be a query, but I just don't know how to make it work. Any suggestions gratefully received.
