Drop-Shadow Tool causes the whole Canvas to Drop-Shadow (Windows 7)
Posted by: Cyrus - 05-13-2018, 07:55 PM - Forum: Gimp 2.10 - Replies (6)

This is frustrating, and I don't know what is causing it.

For most of the time, Drop-Shadow tool works just fine. But for whatever reason, after a certain amount of time, it will start having this problem where no matter which Layer I select for the tool, it will cause the entire Canvas to have a Drop-Shadow, expanding the size of the Canvas and exposing transparency underneath.

This has happened to me twice, so far, with two different project files.

Am I doing something wrong?

Thank you

  Question: Blending image to transparent
Posted by: chhe - 05-13-2018, 02:45 AM - Forum: General questions - Replies (1)

I want to blend the edges of an image so that they have a smooth transition to transparent (alpha) like the top part of the image shown in the screen shot image attached (except all around each side of the soup can). I plan on printing this on green colored paper so that it prints less and less towards the edge so that the brown carpeting in the background gradually blends into the green of the paper. I can't seem to figure out how to do this with GIMP. I am using version 2.10.0. Here are the steps I've tried so far.

1. Open the image.
2. Under layers right click the selection and click add layer mask.
3. Click the gradient tool and draw a vertical line across the image.
4. Select background color (BG) in the gradient popup that appears.
5. Then under the layers tab right click the layer and select apply layer mask.

When I do step 5 the image goes back to normal again instead of how it appears in the attached screenshot which is what I want. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I also tried using feathering as described in https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5DH72ceOH2I, but this isn't quite what I want as I noticed it causes the soup can in the center to become distorted and its colors faded. I want the soup can to be unaffected and only the carpet in the background to be faded. Can anybody tell me how to do what I want with GIMP?

  Dot for dot
Posted by: gimp-artist - 05-12-2018, 08:31 AM - Forum: General questions - Replies (2)

Gimp doc says "When view>dot for dot is unchecked the image should be the real size if the image resolution is the same as the screen resolution.", according to this attachment.

I measured my monitor vertically. I divided it by 1440p, which is my display setting. The result ppi is approximately 109 ppi.

I opened a blank new image sized 640x480 with 109 ppi resolution.

Then I unchecked the "dot for dot" in view menu.

I measured the vertical size of the image. The size is smaller than 480/109. It should be 480/109.

So, I checked the "dot for dot" in view menu. Then the size is 480/109.

Why is this happen?

Save / Open File in GIMP 2.10
Posted by: M.I.E. 1981 - 05-12-2018, 08:18 AM - Forum: Extending the GIMP - Replies (2)

Hello,

My question might be silly, but on my GIMP 2.10 when I try to open or save or export a file, in the browser I can't go UP in hierarchy, so when I am in a folder, I am stuck in.

Also, When I click on a specific drive, no files appears on the right panel.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Building GIMP 2.10 from source on OSX fails on “gimp-debug-tool-2.0”
Posted by: ausrius - 05-11-2018, 07:17 PM - Forum: OSX - Replies (2)

I was trying to build GIMP 2.10 on OSX for a week now with no success. Most of the problems were all the different dependencies and such. While it took time all of it was solvable but now I think I came to an dead end. I have gone to the stage where I could finally run "make" and after some time of building different things it errors out on "gimp-debug-tool-2.0". Here is the output log:

Code:
Making all in app-tools
 CCLD     gimp-debug-tool-2.0
Undefined symbols for architecture x86_64:
 "_OBJC_CLASS_$_NSString", referenced from:
     objc-class-ref in libappwidgets.a(gimpcriticaldialog.o)
 "_OBJC_CLASS_$_NSWorkspace", referenced from:
     objc-class-ref in libappwidgets.a(gimpcriticaldialog.o)
 "_objc_autoreleasePoolPop", referenced from:
     _gimp_critical_dialog_response in libappwidgets.a(gimpcriticaldialog.o)
 "_objc_autoreleasePoolPush", referenced from:
     _gimp_critical_dialog_response in libappwidgets.a(gimpcriticaldialog.o)
 "_objc_msgSend", referenced from:

ld: symbol(s) not found for architecture x86_64
clang: error: linker command failed with exit code 1 (use -v to see invocation)
make[2]: *** [gimp-debug-tool-2.0] Error 1
make[1]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1
make: *** [all] Error 2

I have got similar errors when I was building Qt, OpenCv applications. The problem there was that libraries were missing and I solved it by providing paths to those libraries. But what could possibly be missing when building "gimp-debug-tool-2.0" which seems to be internal tool.
If somebody had any similar experience or has any clue/hint on how I could solve this problem and could point me to the right direction it would be very much appreciated.
Tanks in advance.

  2.10 and installation problems
Posted by: Blighty - 05-11-2018, 06:15 PM - Forum: Gimp 2.10 - Replies (1)

This is just a bit of a rant to vent my frustrations.

What I would like to do:
1) Leave my 2.8 intact and untouched
2) Install 2.10 without anything from 2.8 ie a clean install

I haven't found a way to do that. I have a portable version installed as that doesn't interfere with 2.8. But I consider this as a temporary measure (it is on a USB stick for now)

Such great software but installation is difficult. How many potential new users are put off by this and go elsewhere?

I have the "unable to open folders" problem. The suggested work around is ok for OPEN, but doesn't work for SAVE or EXPORT. I have no idea where files are being saved. Will have to do a disk search to find them. Not ideal !
