  Pasted image not visible
Posted by: Yash Pal - 10-23-2016, 02:49 PM - Forum: General questions - Replies (7)

I copied and pasted a part of an image in the same image, after extending the canvas size to accommodate the pasted part - the background of the image was made transparent. The pasted image is not visible, though the marching ants of the selection are seen. I changed the background to white, (new layer - white; and put the white layer below the existing layer, but still the pasted layer cannot be seen (not visible).

I am making some mistake but do not know it. Can someone please tell me how to make the pasted layer visible?

OS: Ubuntu 14.04; GIMP: The version available in Ubuntu Software Centre (2.8.18)

I had asked this question in another forum; so far, there is no reply.

  making a displacement more "fluid"
Posted by: Espermaschine - 10-22-2016, 06:14 PM - Forum: General questions - Replies (8)

When i displace a gradient with a displacement map, i get slightly jaggy edges.
Is there a way to avoid this ?
Or does it require a higher bitrate image, so that there is more information in the gradient ?

Using 'Adaptive supersampling' when drawing the gradient does not help.

  Saving selections in a channel
Posted by: Espermaschine - 10-22-2016, 06:09 PM - Forum: General questions - Replies (4)

When i type text, then go to 'Text to path', make a selection from that path and save it in a channel, that selection is superior (more precise) to using 'Alpha to selection' and saving that in a channel, right ?

  Displacement Filter Maps
Posted by: Espermaschine - 10-22-2016, 06:06 PM - Forum: General questions - Replies (2)

Is there any advantage when using the Displacment Filter, in using a channel as the map instead of a black & white bitmap ?
Or is that technically the same ?

Haven't looked at uploading pictures to here yet and I don't want too put one on here that is too large.
I cut a small area out of a photo with red bottle-brushes on them and made a pattern.

  Question about paths
Posted by: Espermaschine - 10-21-2016, 12:38 PM - Forum: Other graphics software - Replies (3)

There is some sort of inconsistent behaviour that i'd like to understand.

If i make a drawing in Inkscape, there are no layers unless i create them.
When i draw something in Illustrator, part of shapes are automatically on different layers.

When i import a path i made in Inkscape into Gimp, it creates a bunch of path-layers for different parts, that werent existent in Inkscape.

Why is that ?

  Gimp Installation
Posted by: rich2005 - 10-21-2016, 12:07 PM - Forum: Windows - Replies (1)

A set of short videos about installing and setting up Gimp in Windows 10
Duration 3 to 6 minutes each (no 30 minute Epics here)

Installing Gimp for the first time.

Initial set-up

Adding resources, brushes, fonts, a new theme

Installing local help

Moving tabs and docks
Did you look at the second video Initial set-up for Gimp in single window mode? That is the best way for new users.

However, changing the look of the interface is possible, this gives examples for re-arranging the parts of the single window. About 6 minutes duration.

  Angled Guides
Posted by: Blighty - 10-21-2016, 11:20 AM - Forum: General questions - Replies (7)

Is it possible to create angled guides in Gimp? For example, I want a guide to go through point (x,y) at an angle of 22.5 degrees. I can't find a way to rotate a guide.

  modifying raw/tiff files
Posted by: metulburr - 10-20-2016, 02:06 AM - Forum: General questions - Replies (2)

I installed ufraw. But i was expecting to modify a raw image in a way like in GIMP with a jpeg or png etc. Having all the tools (copy/paste, blend, layers, etc.). But you dont. All you get in urfraw is a histogram, EXIF info, etc. Not the basic tools.

What if i wanted to blow up an image using a raw image, while also doing tasks such as
