This is not working for me.
It creates a selection with sharp corners instead.

Anybody else experiencing this ? Bug ?

Tried using Colors > Info > Smooth Palette, but it is not working correctly in 2.10. The composite image below shows the problem.
(This is the first time I have had to go back to 2.8 to do something - 2.10 has been good so far)

OK so I want to blur a rectangle (or it doen't matter the shape but it's a rectangle) against a transparent background. But every single one of the blurring tools don't care about the alpha at all. Every blurring tool in GIMP will just leave the rectangle's edge solid with all the contents blurred. Specifically I want to use the Motion Blur filter. The preview is always fine with the edges getting blurred and everything but even if I select the dang alpha channel there's always just a big solid rectangle with all the contents in it blurred. Is this a glitch or what? Anyone know what's going on.

I am trying to use gimp to edit NEF (nikon RAW) files, but it gives me this message:   

There is no RAW loader installed to open 'Raw Nikon' files.

GIMP currently supports these RAW loaders:
- darktable (http://www.darktable.org/), at least 1.7
- RawTherapee (http://rawtherapee.com/), at least 5.2

I attempted to add RawTherapee, but must be doing something incorrectly because i am still unable to open the files in Gimp.

Could anyone tell me which of the loaders they recommend, and how to install it so it will properly work with gimp?

If I wanted to take a picture like this (or any other picture for that matter) and make the colors more similar and the brightness of the colors more similar, how would I do that? I've exhausted my methods and have came up short.

I just started using gimp for painting and drawing. I was drawing some subjects on a red background with a dark hue. As I was using the measuring tool to get the proportions right, suddenly all the dockable dialogues disappeared and the image became full screen. I don't know, maybe I did the wrong click in my stylus. Not knowing how to get the image to leave full screen, I rest gimp to the default settings. I restarted the program and I got the image to go back in a smaller window and the dockable boxes to show. but the drawing is misbehaving. All the colors I use with the brush show muted on the red background. Other files do not this. I think there must be a layer or something that I accidentally activated. I am attaching the file, I hope it works.

Hello, I work in forensic science and am teaching a lab at a university using the subtraction method for footwear and fingerprints.

Effectively I have 2 photographs taken using a tripod and the same lighting and camera settings (I have JPEG and NEF files for both photographs)
 - 1 is of a dusty partial footwear mark on a wooden floor
 - 1 is of the wooden floor but with the footwear mark completely cleaned away after the first photograph

I want to subtract the background (cleaned substrate) from the photograph showing the footwear mark, leaving only the footwear mark which will hopefully reveal more detail that was visibly lost in the wood grain background. The background can often interfere with visualising the print, especially with fingerprints and so the removal of the background can reveal fine details in ridges, valleys and pores etc.

I have experience using the subtraction method in Photoshop but as this is a university course I am unable to get multiple licences due to funding etc and so I have started playing around with GIMP instead.

I have tried a few methods I found online loading the images as layers and playing around with the subtraction and difference modes with some success but was wondering if there were any other settings/changes I could use to improve this? 

Also, is there an auto-align function in GIMP? e.g. solid lines between floorboards are aligned, not just the photographs themselves. As much as I try not to knock the tripod between photographs there sometimes can be very slight movement.
