I am trying to make up for the imperfect lighting conditions in a couple photos I took that I want to turn into textures for 3d models. The lighting on the sides of the nose, face, under the eyebrows, etc, are a slightly darker shade, and I have had trouble experimenting with the tools while being inexperienced with gimp. I would ideally like to have a brush which would lighten only a selected color. Thanks in advance for any help that I might receive.

Is there a way to determine what is the darkest pixel in the image?
I want to use "pdb.gimp_image_select_color" using the darkest pixel (which is not always pure black (0, 0, 0))

I need to produce a professional print quality image in PDF from a gimp project. The problem is Gimp 2.10 seems to be  lowering the quality of the image to about a quarter of the original resolution when I export to PDF, with no visible settings (at least to my eye) to change quality. My "print size" settings are correct, I did check that.

I've added an image of the problem below. Note the resolution of the original project, and the resolution of the PDF file in the info at the left.

So please help me. How can I produce a PDF image and retain the original quality of the image? Any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I've been using GIMP for a few months and a strange new behavior has started with the Scale tool... resizing works normally but when I try to move the selection, it's started only moving along vertical, horizontal, or diagonal lines and snapping strangely. It makes it frustrating to move selections precisely. So far as I know I didn't change any snap to gridline settings or anything like that, and the behavior is persisting after uninstalling 2.10.8 and reinstalling 2.10.10.  Any clues?

Also while I'm here, anyone have tips for how to get the buttons larger than the "Huge" setting will allow? I have a UHD screen and the largest UI settings still are pretty tiny.

When I click on "magick.exe" 
all I get back is a momentary flash of something , then nothing .
How to startup ImageMagick ?

I am running a new install of Linux Mint 19.1, MATE Desktop (64 bit) and GIMP 2.8.22.

Brand new installs of GIMP 2.8 like to open with a spray paint tool selected.  Accidental click of the mouse over the image canvas can damage the image.

I forgot how to change the tool and set about asking for help, then gave that Preferences page another look.  So I will answer my own question.

Solution:

Go to Edit > Preferences.  In the left panel, select Toolbox.
The tool list will have the default tool highlighted.  See the image showing the Toolbox Preference image.  It shows the Measurement tool yhighlighted, the Measurement tool is also highlighted in the Toolbox itself.

To change the default tool:
Find the one you want, double-click on its line.

To Save your changes:  In the left panel, select Tool Options
This is just above the Toolbox.  Click to Save Now or to Save on Exit.  See the Tools Options image, where I drew a box around the save options at the top of the Preference window.

If I install 2.10 can I still keep editing .xcf images I've saved in 2.8?

I'm trying to cut out a part of an image to make some stickers, but I'm having a problem with path tool. It just copies the shape and fills it with white. I'm not sure how to fix that, I'd appreciate any help.
