flatten image to transparent |

Hello all,
I am new to the forum.
I did a couple searches, been over Google a bit but ....
If I can explain this: ( I am sure I might not use the "proper" term somewhere, please excuse me )
I have a png image with a transparent background.
If I re-size the canvas, the only method I know to make the new image include the
expanded canvas is to Image -> Flatten Image.
This removes the transparent background and replaces it with the present background color from the tool bar.
The same type of thing happens to me with text. In order to have the text as part of the image,
I have to go to Image -> Flatten Image. Once again it removes the current transparent background
and replaces with the present background color from the tool bar.
My question(s) is/are then:
Is there a way to make the image not loose the transparent background, ie
use something other than Flatten Image
or
Is there a way to set the background selected color on the tool bar to transparent?
Thanks so much for your time,
kumado

Lenovo Brand |

I am looking at getting a new computer. Have seen a Lenovo 'all in one' computer that I like.
Lenovo IdeaCentre 300 23.8" AMD A6 1TB 8GB All-in-One
Not heard of Lenovo before. I will be doing graphics work. (Photo restoration, Fractals etc on it). I don't play games alot. Would this be sufficient and has anybody heard of this brand before and how it works?
At the moment I am using a Toshiba Laptop but gimp wont complete a lot of stuff because it says I don't have the memory, I cant do full resolution fractals plus my fan has stopped working. I can probably still use it for smaller things after I get that fixed but want another bigger one for other stuff

Getting brush effects with mouse? |

Fairly new to the workings of GIMP. I'm using 2.8 with Paint Studio 2.0 addon and a bog-standard mouse.
I'd like to ask if there are any setting combinations (brush types, dynamics and paintbrush modes) that will create the brush stroke and paint effect of, for instance, oils.
What I'm looking for is a stroke which will take the colour from the brush as I paint, leaving a kind of smear or scraped effect at the end of the stroke.
I know this is possible when using a mouse, as a couple of the online paint programs I've used feature just such an effect.
To be honest I'm not altogether sure how the various Dynamics work, because it doesn't seem to matter which I pick, all the strokes come out as simple, digital block strokes with no variation or texture.
Any help on getting different paint stroke effects will be very much appreciated.

Let's Draw Anime Style Using GimP!! |

Haiya. haiya, meet again with me... ![[Image: spartalalalaplz.gif]](http://a.deviantart.net/avatars/s/p/spartalalalaplz.gif)
Days before, it seems GimpChat is out/down so I find this forum, recognize several admin(s) here that help me on GimpChat... Decide to post tutorial here, maybe it will useful later on... ![[Image: spartalalalaplz.gif]](http://a.deviantart.net/avatars/s/p/spartalalalaplz.gif)
Oh, and about me... I am using GimP since, maybe four or five years ago and use it for digital painting... I consider myself an... errgh, anime style artist because I am using Japanese style drawing style... ( http://lordofelemental.deviantart.com ) And just about one year more ago moving to Linux bla bla bla bla etc etc etc bla bla bla bla
Oh, and for info, I am still using GimPainter 2.6 on Linux Mint 17.2, I downgrade my default GimP 2.8 installation to 2.6 because I am very used to 2.6... (And don't want upgrade to Linux Mint 18)
1. Alright, the tutorial is very simple...
The sketch is the same, whether it is traditional or digital medium. There are several types of people doing sketch, too. You might want to take the 'painter' approach or, just like me, using 'pencil' like method. Keep the sketch clean and simple, don't waste your energy for unnecessary lines.
![[Image: 01_sketch.jpg]](https://s6.postimg.org/rgl1qcloh/01_sketch.jpg)
RECOMMEND BRUSH SETTING:
Beacuse I am used to sketch in paper using pencil, in GimP, I usually found brush preset that is good for doing sketch can be categorized to 'pencil' brush. Avoid using solid black brush preset that look like you are 'inking', remember you might find it hard to lineart/ink later if your sketch is too dark at this time.
Use brush that has lower opacity.
For short: anything can works.
2. Lineart
Lineart of course need to made on different layers... Me myself usually separate layer between hair, skin, and clothes. Don't make too much layer, though. Keep the words 'efficiency' in mind. But this time I drew mecha (robot in japanese). Again, don't waste too much time on lineart. If you find it hard to make lineart, then the sketch maybe not clean enough. Efficiency, efficiency! Urgh, who carved those words to my mind...
![[Image: 02_lineart.jpg]](https://s6.postimg.org/4a0paxept/02_lineart.jpg)
RECOMMEND BRUSH SETTING:
Consider inking is your clean version on lineart...
3. Coloring
Here comes the special feature of G Mic. use G Mic > Black & White > Colorize (Interactive) which will come in handy. Of course you might want to fix several part manually. After that you might want to use 'Indexed Decompose' script to separate layer for each color... (Urgh, where is the link to the script...)
For usage of this script you can learn by yourself...
or visit this link (it is in Krita) http://www.davidrevoy.com/article247/kri...g-tutorial
(By the way, my GimPainter 2.6 not allow me to use G'Mic, so I use G'Mic that packed along with Krita. In Krita there is a 'Split Layer' command that comes in handy...) ---> then saved it in .PSD format before move back to GimP for coloring...
![[Image: 03_basecolor.jpg]](https://s6.postimg.org/fxq5rqegx/03_basecolor.jpg)
![[Image: 04_color.jpg]](https://s6.postimg.org/7i56nz0zl/04_color.jpg)
![[Image: 05_othercolor.jpg]](https://s6.postimg.org/5g4p9q30h/05_othercolor.jpg)
![[Image: 046blankbg.jpg]](https://s6.postimg.org/nhnu7ix1d/046blankbg.jpg)
For tips... Nothing seems important here because it seems everyone has his/her own preferences about coloring method... And mine is nothing special..
![[Image: white_dragon_champion_mk__vi_by_lordofel...ax8hvb.jpg]](http://img03.deviantart.net/8e5e/i/2017/029/7/4/white_dragon_champion_mk__vi_by_lordofelemental-dax8hvb.jpg)
Why using GimP? Why not using Krita for digital coloring? Maybe because I have not any real experience using traditional medium when it comes to painting. And Krita is trying hard to mimic traditional painting tools... Me? I just want my painting done fast. What is the point of mimicking traditional tools if that makes us spending more times on it? For the sake of tradition?

Add text to an animation (a gif) |

Another look at a question that often comes up.
Adding text to an animation is often a beginners problem.
For three or four layers, text can be added, duplicated and merged layer-by-layer. More that that and there are scripts to automate the process. This demo uses one of those ofn-interleave-layers.py which you can get at ofnuts sourceforge page
https://sourceforge.net/projects/gimp-to...s/scripts/
This demo shows
. Ofnuts sourceforge page for the plugin.
. Change the color mode from Indexed to RGB
. Unoptimizing the gif (if required) to make all layers canvas size.
. Adding text and set the text layer to canvas size
. Apply the interleave layers plugin
. Optimize the new animation.
duration 6 minutes
Edit: ofn-interleave-layers.zip (currently dated 2020-04-25 ) from http://sourceforge.net/projects/gimp-too...s/scripts/
